You and Elephants

WEPA is a growing international community with an interest in a better future for elephants and people. Elephant training and other field work is carried out by professional experts, but there are also ways in which volunteers can help make a difference.

Volunteer Opportunities

Our international team of volunteers is seeking new members to spread the word and to raise funds for helping elephants. There are various options on how to become a part of creating a better future:

Spreading the word through internet can be a powerful tool. If you like WEPA's work and this website, you can let your friends and others know about it through Facebook, discussion forums, etc.

The media in your country may also be interested. One way of helping elphants is contacting magazines, newspapers, and TV and radio stations in your country and referring them to this website.

Fundraising events are of great importance in meeting the increasing need of funding required to continue and expand the work to help elephants. Organizers of such events receive all the necessary material and instructions from us. If you would like to organize a fundraising event in your country, please contact us at:

Co-Operation for Professionals: Education in Elephant Management

If you are professionally involved with working elephants, you may be interested in the available options of co-operation:

Workshops given by WEPA experts on improving elephant management are available to all elephant-related institutions and enterprises: tourism, conservation, logging, zoos, circuses, etc. Workshops are tailored to meet the individual needs of the institution in question. Topics available include e.g. methods to improve elephants' obedience and reliability at work, methods to solve behaviour problems and to reduce aggression, methods to make training of elephants faster and safer, and how these can be used to improve elephant well-being and health. Workshops are given in the premises of the institution in question by a visiting team of WEPA experts. We normally charge a fee covering the time and costs (travelling etc.) of the WEPA experts, but under special circumstances, sharing of costs can be discussed.

Other Forms of Partnership

Co-operation in other ways of improving well-being and reliability of working elephants can also be discussed. Government bodies, non-governmental organizations, private companies, and other institutions involved with elephants are welcome to contact us for discussion of potential forms of affiliation.

Co-Operation for Professionals: Education in Elephant Training

Training in the use of the Positive Learning Method, a science-based, efficient and painless way to train elephants, is available for professional elephant trainers. The method can be taught to in two ways. One possibility is a course of a few weeks, which gives an understanding of all the basic principles and opportunities to practice. Such a course gives elephant trainers the capacity to bring significant developments in their own training methodology, improving learning rate of elephants and safety of training. However, in order to truly master the Positive Learning Method and to reap all its benefits, the second option is needed: such a training course combined to a longer-term co-operation, in which the WEPA experts return after set intervals for several times to follow up with the development and to continue guiding the trainers to refine their skills in applying the method.
